Claude Ballif

Claude Ballif (born May 22, 1924 in Paris , † July 24, 2004 in Poissons ) was a French composer .

Claude Balliff studied at the Paris Conservatory with Noël Gallon , Tony Aubin and Olivier Messiaen , 1954 in Berlin composition with Boris Blacher and Josef Rufer and musicology with Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt and acoustics at Fritz Winckel and was then at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt students by Luigi Nono , Bruno Maderna , Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen . In 1955 he received the first prize for composition in the Geneva International Competition for his orchestral work Lovecraft . In 1959 he became Pierre Schaeffer's assistant in the Groupe de recherches musicales . In 1963 he received a professorship for music history and analysis at the École Normale de Musique de Paris . From 1982 to 1990 he taught composition at the Paris Conservatory, then at the Sevran Conservatory .

In the essay Introduction à la métatonalité , Ballif presented his compositional concept of metatonality , in which tonal and atonal orders are systematically combined and twelve-tone , serial and, since 1968, microtonal processes are used.
