Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini (* 1971 in Basel ) is a Swiss composer.

Life

While studying German and Italian at the University of Basel , Scartazzini decided to take up composition studies with Rudolf Kelterborn in Basel, which he later continued with Wolfgang Rihm at the Karlsruhe University of Music . In 1999/2000 he completed a semester at the Royal Academy of Music in London .

Since then he has worked as a composer (initially also as a high school teacher). His works have been performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Easter Festival , the Lucerne Festival and the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music .

Renowned orchestras such as the Basel Chamber Orchestra , the basel sinfonietta , the Collegium Novum Zurich , the Ensemble Contrechamps, the Ensemble intercontemporain and the Ensemble Phoenix performed Scartazzini's works.

In 2004/05 he was composer in residence at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

In 2006 the opera Wut was premiered at the Erfurt Theater. A CD with songs was released by the English label Guild Music.

In 2012, the opera Der Sandmann (based on Der Sandmann by ETA Hoffmann ) premiered in nine scenes at Theater Basel , based on the libretto by Thomas Jonigk and directed by Christof Loy .

In February 2017 the opera about Edward II (based on Christopher Marlowe von Jonigk) was premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (musical direction: Thomas Søndergård , production: Christof Loy ).

Scartazzini won several prizes, including the Jakob Burckhardt Award from the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Foundation in Basel and the study award from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in Munich.
