Chamber Orchestra Basel (2013)

The Basel Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1984 as Serenata Basel by graduates of various Swiss music academies. In 1999 it was renamed the Basel Chamber Orchestra.

The focus of the chamber orchestra's musical work is on combining old and new music. The Basel Chamber Orchestra is thus continuing a concert tradition that was brought to life by the Basel music patron and conductor Paul Sacher ( Basel Chamber Orchestra , 1926–1987).

The ensemble plays early music on baroque instruments. In addition to the historical performance practice , the orchestra also cultivates contemporary music creation and awards composition commissions every year. The symphonies of the (Viennese) classical music up to the romantic instrumental music of Franz Schubert , Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Johannes Brahms constitute another large area .

Concerts take place regularly in Basel and the region as part of our own subscription series. In addition, the Basel Chamber Orchestra gives guest performances at international festivals and performs in the concert halls of European music centers such as London, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Zurich, Munich, Vienna, Valencia and Paris.

The first performance of Handel's opera Lotario in Basel and at the Handel Festival in Halle brought the orchestra international recognition in 2004. Furthermore, the CD series Classicist Modernism and Theater Music were published under the direction of Sir Christopher Hogwood and CD recordings were made with soloists such as Angelika Kirchschlager , Andreas Scholl , Sabine Meyer , Sol Gabetta or Nuria Rial (Echo Klassik for the 2012 opera recording ) . Another focus of the chamber orchestra's activities is the overall performance and recording of Beethoven's symphonies under the direction of Giovanni Antonini . In 2008, the orchestra won the Echo Klassik as Ensemble of the Year for the recording of the third and fourth symphonies . By 2032, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the Il Giardino Armonico Ensemble, under Antonini's direction, want to record all of Joseph Haydn's symphonies on CD and perform them in concert.

The Basel Chamber Orchestra often plays under the musical direction of its concert masters, has dispensed with a chief conductor since 1999 and instead employs project-specific specialists. It works closely with conductors such as Giovanni Antonini, Trevor Pinnock , Mario Venzago and Paul Goodwin .
