Paul Goodwin (born September 2, 1956 in Warwick ) is an English oboist and conductor .

Life

Paul Goodwin came from the English county of Warwickshire . He attended the City of London School . He studied oboe with Janet Craxton , composition and music theory at the University of Nottingham . He then studied baroque oboes at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and with Jürg Schaeftlein at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts (1981/82). He became principal oboist with The English Concert (1985/86), the London Classical Players (1985–1994), the King's Consort (1989–1994) and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (1989–1992).

After becoming a regular conductor of the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) in 1995 , he also devoted himself to his conducting career. From 1996 he continued his training with Jorma Panula in Helsinki / Finland. With the AAM he performed at the Proms in London and toured Europe. In 1999 he became the first guest conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra . He worked u. a. with Kiri Te Kanawa , Joshua Bell , Maria João Pires , Mstislav Rostropovich and Magdalena Kožená . His recordings have been nominated for the Grammy Awards and the Gramophone Classical Music Awards .

He conducted a. a. following orchestras: German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern , Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , BBC Philharmonic , Hallé Orchestra , City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , Scottish Chamber Orchestra , Minnesota Orchestra , Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra , National Symphony Orchestra , Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra , Philadelphia Orchestra , Spanish National Orchestra , Philharmonic Orchestra Helsinki , Frankfurt radio Symphony Orchestra and the NDR radio Philharmonic , Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra , Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne , Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra . He also worked at various opera houses and had appearances at the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale).

In 2007 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the city of Halle .
