Janet Craxton
Janet Helen Rosemary Craxton (born May 17, 1929 in London , † July 18, 1981 there ) was an English oboist .
The daughter of the composer Harold Craxton studied from 1945 to 1948 at the Royal Academy of Music with Helen Gaskell and then until 1949 at the Conservatoire de Paris with Pierre Bajeux . She was first oboist a. a. with the Hallé Orchestra , the London Mozart Players (1952–54), the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1954–63), the London Sinfonietta (1969–81) and the Royal Opera House (1979–81).
From 1958 she taught oboe at the Royal Academy. In 1968 she founded the London Oboe Quartet with violinist Perry Hart , violist Brian Hawkins and cellist Kenneth Heath (after Heath's death with Charles Tunnell ). The quartet made a name for itself primarily with the interpretation of works by contemporary composers and awarded composition commissions a. a. to Neil Sanders , Alan Rawsthorne , Oliver Knussen , John Exton, and John McCabe . Janet Craxton was married to the pianist and composer Alan Richardson . Her brother John Craxton became known as a painter.
