London Sinfonietta
The London Sinfonietta is a British chamber music ensemble that was founded in London in 1968 by Nicholas Snowman and David Atherton and is dedicated to the cultivation of contemporary music . It consists of 18 instrumentalists. Beyond Atherton and Oliver Knussen , who followed him as musical director from 1998 to 2002, the formation is led by guest conductors.

Since the first concert on January 24, 1968, a world premiere of John Tavener's The Whale , the orchestra has had more than 300 compositions by composers such as Thomas Adès , Django Bates , George Benjamin , Luciano Berio , Harrison Birtwistle , Tansy Davies , Dai Fujikura , Jonny Greenwood , Kenneth Hesketh , Magnus Lindberg , Steve Reich , Markus Stockhausen , Mark-Anthony Turnage or Iannis Xenakis and many other works premiered. Numerous records have been released on renowned labels and our own London Sinfonietta label , including works by established composers such as Louis Andriessen , Alban Berg , John Cage , Henryk Górecki , Hans Werner Henze , György Ligeti , Witold Lutosławski , Arnold Schönberg , Karlheinz Stockhausen , Oliver Knussen , Igor Stravinsky , Michael Tippett , Toru Takemitsu and Kurt Weill , but also by younger composers such as Richard Causton , Jonathan Cole , Larry Goves and Ian Vine . Compositions from the pop area, for example by Aphex Twin or Squarepusher , are also increasingly being performed.
