Cristina Zavalloni (born November 21, 1973 in Bologna ) is an Italian singer ( mezzo-soprano ) and composer who has emerged in jazz and chanson as well as in opera and new music .

Live and act

Zavalloni started singing at the age of eight. While in high school, she attended jazz clinics at festivals such as Umbria Jazz . Since 1992 she has been studying classical composition at the Giovan Battista Martini Conservatory in her hometown .

In 1993 she joined the OFP Orchestra . In 1994 she founded her Open Quartet , which she expanded to include Michel Godard in 1997 . In addition, she worked in the large formation Bassefere . In 2001 she was a singer in a program of the big band Dolmen Orchestra ( Minotrauma ). She also worked with Kenny Wheeler , Steve Coleman , Carla Bley , George Russell , Bruno Tommaso , Stefano Bollani , Mike Gibbs , Jason Moran and Benoît Delbecq . She has given concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , Free Music Jazz Festival Antwerp, Umbria Jazz and the London Jazz Festival .

Since 1998 she has also appeared in opera, initially in the repertoire between Rossini and Busoni . 2002 wrote Louis Andriessen his play La Passione which the Canti Orfici of Dino Campana building, for them and the violinist Monica Germino. Building on a letter that Cathy Berberian wrote to him, he also composed Letter from Cathy , which Zavalloni performed in her Berberian program. She also played leading roles in the world premieres of his musical theater pieces La Commedia , Anaïs and Theater of the World .

In addition to her own bands, she has performed with numerous ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta , the BBC Symphony Orchestra , Schoenberg Ensemble, Sentieri Selvaggi, MusikFabrik , Orkest De Volharding , Orchestra della Rai Torino and the Los Angeles Philharmonic . She can also be heard on albums by Cristiano Arcelli, Diego Baiardi / Antonio Crepax, Michael Nyman ( Acts of beauty / Exit no exit , 2006), the Ensemble Dissonanzen , Stefan Winter , Nicola Conte and Zingiber.

Prizes and awards

With the program Come valersi non servilmente di Bertolt Brecht , which she wrote, she won first prize in the Iceberg jazz competition in 1996 .
