Gianluca Petrella (born March 14, 1975 in Bari ) is an Italian jazz trombonist .

Live and act

Petrella graduated from the Bari Conservatory in 1994 with top marks. In 1993 he started working with saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano (with whom he made his first recording “Hybrid and Hot” in 1994, Splash). In the same year he made a recording with saxophonist Greg Osby ("Do it" 1994, Right Tempo). From 1995 he was first trombone in the "OFP" orchestra, which was for a time under the direction of Carla Bley , Steve Coleman and Bruno Tommaso . Also in 1995 he was on the compilation CD “Italian Jazz Today” of Musica Jazz magazine . In 1997 he stayed in Germany and the Netherlands for a long time and toured Canada with Enrico Rava. In 1998 he toured with the drummer Roberto Gatto and his group "The Noisemakers" ("Rugantino" 2000 on CAM, also live at the Teatro Sistino in Rome 2001).

In 2000 he was a member of the French Orchester National de Jazz under Paolo Damiani (e.g. “Charmediterranéan”, ECM 2001, with Anouar Brahem and Gianluigi Trovesi ). He played with almost all important Italian jazz musicians, u. a. 2001 in the Town Hall in New York with the quintet by Enrico Rava . He has been working with Rava for many years; he can also be heard, for example, on his 1998 CD "Certi Angelo Segreti". In 2001 an album was released under his own name "X-Ray" (Auand). He often accompanies the singer Cristina Zavalloni and played with jazz musicians such as Lester Bowie and Pat Metheny .

Currently (2007) he plays with "Indigo 4" ( Francesco Bearzatti , saxophone, Paolino Dalla Porta , bass, Fabio Accardi , drums), with the "Bread and Tomato Trio" (Michele Papadia, Hammond organ, Fabio Accardi, drums), im Duo with accordionist and pianist Antonello Salis (“Rinoceronto sul Limbara” 2003, Time in Jazz) and with the “Domino Quartet” ( Sean Bergin , Antonio Borghini , Hamid Drake ). With Indigo 4 he recorded an album as a leader on Blue Note Records in 2005 ("Indigo 4"), followed by "Kaleido" in 2007. As a guest soloist with the Jazz Big Band Graz, he appeared on the 2011 album Urban Folktales (ACT).

In 2007 he received the Eurodjango and the "Paul Acket Award", the successor to the Dutch Bird Award .
