The oldest known written mention of Steinheim took place between 1118 and 1137 under the name Stenhem . In 1264 Steinheim is mentioned as Steynheim in a document from the Arnsburg monastery . The Katharinenkapelle was built in the 13th century. The first school was added in 1787.
The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Steinheim in 1830:
"Steinheim (L. Bez. Nidda) evangel. Branch village; is 2 St. von Nidda, on the Horloff, has 1 church, 97 houses and 498 inhabitants who are Protestant apart from 2 Catholics. - The place had a chapel in the 14th century, which at that time already belonged to the parish church in Rodheim. "
On December 31, 1970, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the voluntary integration into the nearby small town of Hungen took place. For Steinheim, as for all parts of the town, a local district with a local advisory board and mayor was set up.
In 2003 Steinheim won the first ever village competition “ Dolles Dorf ”.
