Paolo Damiani

Paolo Damiani (born March 26, 1952 in Rome ) is an Italian jazz bassist (double bass, cello) and big band leader.

In 1976 he completed his architecture studies in Rome. Then he studied composition a. a. with Bruno Tommaso and Giorgio Gaslini . He made his first recording in 1977 with Gaslini's sextet. 1983 followed a recording with a quintet, directed by him and Gianluigi Trovesi ("Roccellanea", with Paolo Fresu ). Damiani also worked with Albert Mangelsdorff ("Capriccio a Milano" 1988 with Trilok Gurtu , Reijseger ), Charlie Mariano ("Silenzi Osceni" 1987 with Palle Mikkelborg , Tony Oxley ), Anouar Brahem , Miroslav Vitouš , Kenny Wheeler , Cecil Taylor (Italian Instabile Orchestra 2004), John Surman , Louis Sclavis , Enrico Rava , François Jeanneau .

Since 1983 he has been teaching jazz at the Conservatory in L'Aquila . Since 1982 he has directed the “Rumori Mediterranei” jazz festival in Roccella Jonica . From 2000 to 2002 he was the first foreign director of the French Orchester National de Jazz (“Charmediterranéen”, ECM 2002) and since 1988, with Armand Meignan, director of the Franco-Italian jazz festival “Una striscia di terra teconda”, which takes place in Le Mans and Rome in the spring takes place.

He plays regularly in the " Italian Unabile Orchestra " and leads the quintet "Mediana" that uses the old Sardinian instrument Launeddas. From 1996 he was president of the AMJ (Associazione Nazionale Musicisti Jazz).

In 2002 he received the Django d'Or (Italy) .
