Sebastian Fagerlund

Sebastian Fagerlund (born December 6, 1972 in Pargas , Finland) is a Finnish composer .

Life

Fagerlund studied composition with Erkki Jokinen until his diploma in 2004 at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. His first great success was the 2006 clarinet concerto. Since then he has developed into one of the most sought-after composers of his generation.

One focus of his work is solo concerts and orchestral works. He has also written chamber music, vocal and choral works and two operas so far - Döbeln (2009) and Höstsonatas (2017). Many of his compositions were commissioned and performed by major orchestras, conductors and musicians.

In 2011 he received the Teosto Prize from the Verwertungsgesellschaft der Finnish composers' association for his orchestral work Ignite . Since 2013 he has been artistic director of the RUSK Chamber Music Festival in Pietarsaari (Finland). In the 2016/2017 season he was “Composer in Residence” at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam . In 2018 Fagerlund was invited as a guest composer at the Aspen Music Festival , and his opera Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata) was nominated for the International Opera Award 2018 .
