Teodor Currentzis , also Teodoros Kurentzis ( Greek Θεόδωρος Κουρεντζής ; born February 24, 1972 in Athens ) is a Greek-Russian conductor , musician and actor .

Life

Teodor Currentzis attended violin courses at the National Conservatory in Athens from the age of twelve . In 1987 he began studying conducting in Athens before continuing to study with Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1994 to 1999 .

From 2004 to 2010 Currentzis was chief conductor at the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Novosibirsk , the largest opera house in Siberia . There he founded the MusicAeterna Ensemble and the New Siberian Chamber Choir and has received several awards for his work there. In 2006 Currentzis conducted concerts with the singer Alexey Kudrya in Moscow and Novosibirsk on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .

Currentzis was from February 2011 until summer 2019 music director of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Perm . In addition, since 2011 he has been the first permanent guest conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg .

Currentzis took on the lead role in the 2011 film Dau by director Ilja Chrschanowski , which depicts the life of the Russian-Jewish Nobel Prize winner in physics, Lev Landau .

On September 11, 2016, the French-German TV channel arte broadcast the Austrian documentary Currentzis - The Classic Rebel .

In 2017 Currentzis conducted for the first time at the Salzburg Festival . He has been chief conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra since the beginning of the 2018/19 season .
