Opera casts at the Salzburg Festival from 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The opera line-up of the Salzburg Festival from 2017 onwards includes the opera schedule and the line-up of the Salzburg Festival during the artistic direction of Markus Hinterhäuser , which began in 2017, was initially planned for five years and was extended in May 2019 for a further five years until 2026.

concept

The first season of the new artistic director was on the one hand brittle and bulky, on the other hand extremely brave. Never before have so many 20th century operas been heard and seen in one year at the Salzburg Festival: Wozzeck (1925), Lady Macbeth von Mzensk (1934) and Lear (1978). In addition, a new Mozart style beyond convention was announced: La clemenza di Tito was staged by the American director Peter Sellars , who had already set clear accents of modernity in Salzburg with three opera productions in the Gerard Mortier era . The real sensation, however, was the engagement of the conductor Teodor Currentzis and the musicAeterna ensemble , whose Mozart performances in distant Perm in the foothills of the Urals in the west had already achieved cult status, although they were never seen or heard in Central and Western Europe. It was also a feat to team up the renowned and probably world's best Verdi conductor Riccardo Muti , who prefers conventional productions, with the Iranian filmmaker Shirin Neshat , who comes from the experimental field, for an Aida production - with the role debut of Anna Netrebko . For lovers of the more difficult subject, Nina Stemme's role debut as Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was a comparable highlight.

Hinterhäuser put the Salzburg year 2017 under the title "Epicenter of the special". On the one hand, he focused on crossovers in art, on the other hand, he consistently pursues a transcultural discourse: Director William Kentridge ( Wozzeck ) comes from the visual arts and from South Africa, Neshat comes from film and Iran, Simon Stone ( Lear ) from acting and from Australia. "The strategies of power run like a red thread through the opera program with five new productions."

The performances of the Salzburg Festival are in principle given in the original language, with German and English surtitles.
