Young Singers Project
The Young Singers Project (YSP) of the Salzburg Festival has existed since 2008 and is intended to promote young singers - on the one hand by perfecting singing and acting skills in rehearsals, lessons and masterclasses, on the other hand through a range of performance opportunities.
concept
At international auditions, young singers are selected for the project. As part of a grant, the young artists work with established festival artists throughout the summer in Salzburg. The lessons not only include musical aspects, but also scenic rehearsals, language coaching and the expansion of the repertoire.
“Working for and with the young generation has been one of the main focuses of the Salzburg Festival program since the 2008 season. Everyone complains that parents and schools are increasingly failing to educate young people in art. Many regret that only the event counts. Some feel discouraged because the so-called high culture seems to be aging with its audience. The festival takes action. On the one hand, we want to actively promote the next generation - [with] the 2008 newly installed Young Singers Project. On the other hand, we want to attract a new audience. Youth camps, inexpensive youth tickets, student projects and accompanying events suitable for young people are intended to awaken and develop joy in music and understanding of music. "
Appearances
The members of the Young Singers Project have several performance options at the festival:
- They take on smaller roles in the major opera productions, for example, in 2014, six YSP participants were engaged in the new Rosenkavalier in the Großer Festspielhaus , as stewards at Faninal, three noble orphans, milliner and animal dealer. Annika Schlicht, an art student from Tyrol and Wolfgang Resch, the Second Nazi, sang with Charlotte Salomon . At the Trovatore , three YSP participants stood next to Plácido Domingo , Francesco Meli and Anna Netrebko on the stage of the Great House.
- In the children's operas in the university auditorium - 2014 La Cenerentola and The Abduction from the Seraglio - they play the leading roles.
- Finally, the young singers also introduce themselves to the audience in a final concert, which took place in 2014 with the Camerata Salzburg under the direction of Theodor Guschlbauer in the Mozarteum .
Public master classes
Part of the project are master classes , led by important festival artists, to which the audience has free admission. In 2014, three events took place in the Schüttkasten and in the large university auditorium . They were led by Christa Ludwig , Thomas Hampson and Helmut Deutsch .

Achievements of former participants
The YSP also acts as a stepping stone for international careers. Two examples: “ After his [YSP] scholarship, the Italian tenor Antonio Poli received engagements in London, Venice, Salzburg, Milan and Glyndebourne. Andrè Schuen , a young baritone who took part in the YSP in 2010, sang alongside stars like Jonas Kaufmann and Magdalena Kožená in Salzburg last year . ”In spring 2014, Schuen also took on three central baritone roles in Nikolaus Harnoncourt's concertante Da-Ponte -Cycle in the Theater an der Wien - the Don Giovanni , the Figaro- Graf and the Ferrando in Così fan tutte .
The YSP made a guest appearance at the MIDEM 2013 music fair in Cannes and presented four YSP participants in a concert that was enthusiastically received: the Hungarian soprano Maria Celeng , the Italian mezzo-soprano Benedetta Mazzucato , the Austrian tenor Clemens Kerschbaumer and the baritone Yuri Samoilov from Ukraine.
management
The overall management of the YSP has been the responsibility of Toni Gradsack since 2012 . He is supported by Gaiva Bandzinaite (director of studies), Kai Röhrig (conductor and pianist), Dario Tondelli (pianist), Jane Thorner-Mengedoht (lecturer) and Ulrike Köstinger (organization). In the year it was founded (2008), the YSP was headed by Barbara Bonney and Michael Schade , and Marjana Lipovsek took over in 2010 .
