Thomas Walter Hampson (born June 28, 1955 in Elkhart , Indiana ) is an American opera singer ( baritone ).
Life
Hampson is in Spokane ( Washington grew up). He was a student of Marietta Coyle , Elisabeth Schwarzkopf , Martial Singher and Horst Günter , he sings operas, operettas, musicals, oratorios and songs. His repertoire includes title and main roles from operas by Mozart ( Don Giovanni , Le nozze di Figaro , Così fan tutte ), Verdi's ( Don Carlos , La traviata , Macbeth , Simon Boccanegra ) and Tchaikovsky's ( Eugene Onegin ) as well as from works by Gluck ( Iphigénie en Tauride), Wagner ( Parsifal ), Massenet, Strauss ( Arabella ), Busoni, Szymanowski and Lehár ( The Merry Widow ). In autumn 2003 he set up the Hampsong Foundation , which supports and organizes research projects, symposia, master classes and lecture concerts. He has received various international prizes; he is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music and has been awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
In 1987 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He appeared at the Salzburg Festival from 1988. In addition to concerts and numerous recitals, he sang leading roles in the following opera performances: Doctor Faust (Busoni), Król Roger (Szymanowski), Don Carlos (Verdi), Iphigénie en Tauride (Gluck), Don Giovanni (Mozart), La traviata (Verdi).
In 2012 Hampson sang the role of Jago in Verdi's Otello and the title role in Hindemith's Mathis der Maler at the Zurich Opera House and at the New York Met Verdi's Macbeth .
Hampson, father of a daughter from his first marriage, has lived with Austrian Andrea Herberstein since 1986 (with interruptions) , in 2014 in New York and Vienna. The two are married to each other. His son-in-law is the Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni .
