Elkhart is a small American town in Elkhart County in northern Indiana . It is located 170 km east of Chicago at the junction of the Elkhart River with the St. Joseph River . Although it has the same name as the county, it is not its seat.

Elkhart is home to one of the largest marshalling yards in the United States, as well as the National NYC Railroad Museum and the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary .

The motorhome manufacturer Thor Industries is based in Elkhart. The place is also the seat of the leading wind instrument manufacturer Conn-Selmer, Inc. , a subsidiary of Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc.

In the 20th century the Crow-Elkhart and the electric car Elcar were manufactured here.
