Thor Industries is an American manufacturer of RVs . The company sells towable and motorized RVs through its subsidiaries including Airstream , Heartland RV , Jayco and others. In 2019 it was taken over by the German Erwin Hymer Group , which was its first foreign takeover.
history
Thor Industries was founded on August 29, 1980 when Wade FB Thompson and Peter Busch acquired Orthwein Airstream from Beatrice Foods . The name Thor combined the first two letters of the names of both entrepreneurs. The company went public in 1984 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1986 under the ticker symbol THO . In 1988, Thor Industries acquired the minibus division of Kansas-based ElDorado Motor Corp. In 1991, the company acquired the California-based bus manufacturer National Coach. Thor Industries was the second largest RV manufacturer in North America by 1994 and has since made several other acquisitions of smaller RV and bus manufacturers. In 2013 the company sold all of its brands that produced buses. The company has also stopped producing ambulances since 2013.
In May 2015, Thor Industries acquired Postle Aluminum, a supplier of aluminum components already widely used by Thor Industries and its subsidiaries. In July 2016, Thor acquired Jayco for $ 576 million. Jayco, based in Middlebury, Indiana, was the largest privately owned RV manufacturer in the world before it was sold. Jayco's subsidiaries (including Starcraft RV, Highland Ridge and Entegra Coach) were also part of Thor Industries. In September 2018 it was announced that Thor Industries had agreed to purchase German RV manufacturer Hymer, the largest acquisition in the company's history with a volume of 2.1 billion euros. Hymer is the largest motorhome manufacturer in Europe. The deal made Thor Industries the largest RV manufacturer in the world. The sale was officially closed in February 2019.
