Bürstner is a manufacturer of leisure vehicles ( caravans and motorhomes ). Part of the Hymer Group since the end of the 1990s - now the Erwin Hymer Group. The vehicles are produced in Germany , the own furniture production is located in neighboring Alsace ( Wissembourg ) approx. 70 km from Kehl. Combined, Bürstner employs around 650 people at both locations.

Around 350 dealers across Europe are active in the sale and service of the brand and achieve a total turnover of around 270–280 million euros with the sale of the products .

history

In 1924, Jakob Bürstner's large-scale and construction joinery began operations in Kehl-Neumühl, Baden. In 1953 the carpentry was renamed Jakob Bürstner KG . At the end of the 1950s, the first individual caravans were built. In 1961 production was expanded and the company took part in the Caravan Salon in Essen for the first time .

Single-axle caravan

The Bürstner GmbH was created on 1 January 1973 with the renaming of Jakob Bürstner KG. The rapid need for additional production space could not be met at the Neumühl location. For this reason, in 1976, in Wissembourg, Alsace, a former joinery and furniture factory was bought and Bürstner SA , a company under French law, was founded. In the course of time, extensive investments have been made in machines and systems, so that today (2008) one of the most modern production facilities in the industry is located in Wissembourg. In addition to caravans, motorhomes are also manufactured.

This marked the beginning of the change from a purely German to a European manufacturer. In 1977 8,500 units (sales: approx. 35.1 million euros) were produced, in 1982 already 15,000 units (sales: 74.3 million euros). Additional production areas were added in the Kehler Hafen, in which wooden doors were manufactured up until then.

In 1986 this site and its furnishings were purchased and part of the production was relocated there. In 1989, around 20,000 units were produced at both locations with around 1,150 employees. The turnover reached over 156 million euros.

The drastic decline in demand in the overall market at the beginning of the 1990s also hit Bürstner. The takeover by an investor and the simultaneous departure of the Bürstner family in 1993 prevented the company from going bankrupt. In 1994, 8,500 units were produced again and a turnover of 76.7 million euros was achieved with around 520 employees. In 1996 all German company divisions were concentrated at the Kehler Rheinhafen location.

On February 1, 1998, the company was taken over by Hymer AG and is still part of the Erwin-Hymer-Group today .

Motorhome A572

The customer service center was created at the former production site in Kehl-Neumühl in 2004. After economic upward and downward developments, Bürstner (with a subsidiary - Bürstner SA, Wissembourg) with 2 production sites is one of the largest manufacturers in the caravaning industry. The product range included motorhomes, caravans and mobile homes. In the meantime, the production of mobile homes, which were mainly exported to Italy, has been stopped.

Bürstner came up with an invention with the fold-down bed in a semi-integrated motorhome, which was presented as the Ixeo series. The success from the motorhome construction could be adapted for the caravan . Now it was possible to offer four permanent sleeping places with comparatively compact dimensions and significantly reduced weight: The fold-down bed could be placed above the round seating area, and when not in use it could be swiveled up. The Premio Plus and Averso Plus series have a unique selling point in the market and are particularly popular with families with children and smaller towing vehicles.

Locations

The headquarters of Bürstner GmbH & Co KG is located in the Rheinhafen Kehl , on a headland between the Rhine and the westernmost port basin. The motorhomes and mobile homes are produced there on three production lines. In the eastern port area (Bremenwörth area) there is a car wash and a larger storage area for unfinished and finished products. The Bürstner service center is located in Neumühl, and is responsible for customer service and the exhibition of vehicles.

Between 1975 and 2014 caravans were produced in Wissembourg in northern Alsace . Since 2014, the caravan production has been relocated to Kehl, and the cabinet maker has been left in Wissembourg.
