The Laika Caravans SpA , based in San Casciano in Val di Pesa (Tuscany, Italy) is an Italian premium manufacturer of motor homes . The company was founded in 1964 by Giovanbattista Moscardini and has been part of the German Erwin Hymer Group since 2000 .

history

Giovanbattista Moscardini founded the Laika company in 1964 and named it after Laika , the first female dog in space. In 1964 the company produced its first caravan, the "500", as a sign that it could also be towed by a small car like the Fiat Nuova 500 . The first motorhome, the Motorpolo series, was produced 13 years later, in 1977. With the Laserhome series, Laika also entered international territory in 1980 and began exporting its motorhomes for the first time. Laika's first maxi motorhome, the Mito series, was produced in 1991 - one year before the market launch of the motorhome, which later became the brand's flagship. In 1992 the first motorhome in the historic Ecovip series celebrates its market launch. Particularly typical of this series is the brand-typical double window on the front of the alcove, which has since distinguished this model from all others. The Kreos series, which to this day stands for futuristic design and curved walls, celebrated its premiere in 1999.

In 2000 the Laika Caravans was taken over by Hymer AG . In 2002, ten years after the first Ecovip was launched, the series was relaunched. The new Ecovip was characterized by curved lines, rounded shapes and an unusual design. In 2005, the X series was launched on the market. The following year saw the market launch of the Rexosline with its exclusive style in the automotive exterior design, its two GRP cabin doors, the low overall height and an aerodynamic profile. In 2009 Laika introduced the semi-integrated Kreos 5000 SL, followed by the semi-integrated Kreos 5000 models in the following year. With the introduction of the Kreos model, Laika Caravans consolidated its position in the premium segment of the leisure vehicle market. The Kreos series was supplemented by the integrated motorhomes in 2011. In 2012 the Rexosline 9009 was introduced.

In February 2016, the company moved to the newly built business and production facility in San Casciano in Val di Pesa . The new plant was inaugurated in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and is considered to be one of the most advanced production facilities for this branch of industry in Europe.

In 2017 and 2018, the company expanded the Kreos series with further models, which ensured that the brand positioning in the upper segment was consolidated. The new Kosmo series, which is more geared towards the needs of families, was also launched in 2018. Laika took up the trend towards camper vans and more compact vehicles in 2019 with the introduction of the Kosmo Vans and the Kosmo Camper Vans, thus expanding its range of products. Also in 2019, the Erwin Hymer Group was taken over by the American motorhome manufacturer Thor Industries Inc.

Today, Laika's range of products is divided into alcoves, semi-integrated and integrated motorhomes as well as camper vans and vans from the Kosmo, Ecovip and Kreos series.
