Alfredo Pioda (born November 1, 1848 in Locarno ; died November 7, 1909 there ) was a Swiss philosopher , lawyer and politician .

Life

Pioda was born as the son of the surgeon Giacomo (died 1852) and his wife Carolina nee. Bazzi born. He attended the Progymnasium in Locarno and then the Landriani College and the Gymnasium in Lugano . He studied at the universities of Pisa , Turin and Heidelberg Law and received his doctorate in 1870. After a brief trial in Milan in the profession of lawyer , but who apparently did not satisfy him, he returned for a second degree to Heidelberg back and gained there finally a degree in philosophy .

He then settled permanently in Locarno, worked on history , literature , theosophy and spiritualism and wrote magazine articles and books on these topics. He also worked extensively as a translator. He was first involved in local politics and was a member of Locarno's local council from 1884 to 1887 . Then he expanded his political work and was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino and the Swiss National Council from 1893 to 1909 . Alfredo Pioda was a member of the Liberals and in 1900 their Ticino party president.

In 1889, Pioda planned with Franz Hartmann and Countess Constance Wachtmeister the establishment of a theosophical Fraternitas monastery on what was then Monescia, which he owned in large part. The monastery was not built, but the Monte Verità cooperative was founded there a few years later .
