Connie Smith
Connie Smith (born August 14, 1941 as Constance June Meador in Elkhart , Indiana ) is an American country singer who celebrated her greatest success in the 1960s . Their music is counted towards the Nashville Sound .
Beginnings
Connie Smith grew up in West Virginia and Ohio . As a teenager, she gained her first musical experience as a caller in a square dance group . She married and became a mother in the early 1960s . In her spare time, she continued to perform at music events and on local radio. During one of her appearances, the country star Bill Anderson became aware of the singing housewife.
Career
A contract with RCA was concluded in 1964 through the mediation of Anderson. Their first single, Once A Day , made it to the top of the country charts. The song, written especially for her by her mentor, stayed at number one for several weeks and was one of the hits of 1964. Her next singles Then and Only Then , I Can't Remember and If I Talk to Him all made it to the top Place -10. In just a few months, the newcomer made it to the top. There were first awards, including the 1964 "Most Promising Singer" Award from Billboard magazine.
Her streak of success continued in the following years. Practically every single was able to place in the upper part of the country charts. In 1968 Connie Smith suffered a breakdown. The numerous television and radio appearances, press events and concerts took their toll. According to her own statement, only her Christian faith helped her to survive the life crisis. The only way out was to drastically reduce the volume of work. Yet she continued to score top 10 hits year after year. In 1971 she made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry .
From 1972 she turned increasingly to gospel music. She was supported by her third husband, the well-known preacher Marshall Haynes. The hit parade successes became rarer, although she was still represented several times in the top 20. It was only after she switched to the Monument label in 1977 that her chart career finally came to an end. Her last top 100 placement was in 1985 with A Far Cry From You . Her concert appearances were still in demand and she remained a member of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1997 she married country star Marty Stuart , who was seventeen years her junior and who produced her comeback album in 1998.
