Barbara Fairchild
Barbara Fairchild (born November 1, 1950 in Knobel , Arkansas ) is an American country singer and songwriter.
Beginnings
At the age of five, Barbara Fairchild first drew attention to herself by winning a talent competition. When she was fifteen, she recorded a single for a small label and first appeared on a television show. After graduating from high school, she set off for Nashville with a few songs she had written herself . Here she got a job as a songwriter in a music publisher.
Career
In 1969 she signed a record deal with the Columbia label. Her first singles reached middle places in the top 100 until her first and only number 1 hit in 1972 with Teddy Bear Song . The song stayed at the top of the country charts for two weeks and even made it into the pop hit parade. There was a Grammy nomination and several television appearances, including a BBC special in the UK.
In the years that followed, Fairchild scored several top 10 hits, but could not stop the gradual decline in sales. Her career came to an end at the end of the 1970s. Their marriage failed and she left Nashville. A short time later she played a series of not particularly successful duets with Billy Walker . A come-back attempt in Nashville failed in 1984. Finally she turned to gospel music, where she was able to establish herself in the Christian music scene in 1989 as a member of the trio Heirloom.
