Olaf Freese

Olaf Freese (born 1968 in Berlin ) is a German lighting designer who mainly works for opera productions .

life and work

Freese received his technical training at the Berliner Ensemble . After assisting in lighting with Markus Bönzli and Reinhard Traub , he has been designing lighting for various German-speaking theaters since 1992 - such as the Hamburger Schauspielhaus , Residenztheater Munich and Wiener Burgtheater . He was also active at the State Theater in Hanover (both in drama and opera), at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Aalto Theater in Essen. Freese worked with well-known directors such as Anselm Weber , Nikolaus Lehnhoff and Joachim Schlömer .

In 1999 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as part of Luk Perceval's monumental production Schlachten! on the Pernerinsel . In 2001 he returned to Salzburg for Calixto Bieito's production of Verdi's Macbeth , in 2007 for Falk Richter's Freischütz production and in 2013 for Stefan Herheim's production of Wagner's Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

From the 2003–04 season, Freese was permanently engaged at the Deutsches Theater Berlin , where he was responsible for the light in Faust I and II directed by Michael Thalheimer and Die Perser , staged by Dimiter Gotscheff . In autumn 2007 Freese moved to the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin. His productions there include Un ballo in maschera , directed by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito , and Hans Werner Henze's Phaedra , staged by Peter Mussbach in a set by Olafur Eliasson .

In 2015 Freese returned to Salzburg to illuminate the Claus Guth production of Beethoven's Fidelio . In 2018 he will illuminate The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival .
