Stefan Herheim
Stefan Herheim (born March 13, 1970 in Oslo , Norway ) is a Norwegian opera director who works on numerous stages in German-speaking countries, in Scandinavia , the Benelux and the Baltic states .
Life
Herheim trained as a cellist . He later gained directing experience at his own puppet theater before studying opera directing in Hamburg with Götz Friedrich from 1994 to 1999 . His thesis there was a production of the Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .
Herheim received the Götz Friedrich Prize for his production of I puritani at the Aalto Theater in Essen in 2002 . In the years that followed, he attracted attention through a series of controversially discussed works: at the Salzburg Festival with Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio (2003), with Julius Caesar by Georg Friedrich Handel at Den Norske Opera in Oslo and La forza del destino in Berlin (2005 ), with Wagner's Rheingold at the Latvian National Opera in Riga (2006), a Don Giovanni in Essen (2007) and finally the celebrated production of Richard Wagner's Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival (2008).
In 2009 he directed Lohengrin at the Berlin State Opera . In 2010 he was the main director at the Semperoper in Dresden. In 2011 he produced Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam ; the conductor was Mariss Jansons .
In 2015 he staged another time at the Bregenz Festival , this time the Jacques Offenbach opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann .
Opernwelt magazine voted him Director of the Year three times . In 2007 for Don Giovanni in Essen, for his direction of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival in 2008 and in 2010 for his Rosenkavalier production at the Stuttgart State Opera .
From 2020, Herheim will stage Richard Wagner's tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin .
In December 2017, Herheim was appointed artistic director of the Theater an der Wien for an initial period of five years and will take over the management of this music theater belonging to the United Bühnen Wien from the 2022/23 season.
