Opera casts at the Bregenz Festival from 2015

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of opera line-ups for the Bregenz Festival from 2015 onwards includes all artistic contributors to the opera productions of the Bregenz Festival during Elisabeth Sobotka's artistic directorship (2015 to 2024). The works and contributors of the upcoming Bregenz Festival will be announced here after publication.

Conception

The new directorship took over the previous concept of showing every opera on the lake stage for two summers. By opting for Turandot (for 2015 and 2016) and Carmen (for 2017 and 2018), Elisabeth Sobotka stayed within the scope of the most popular of the opera world, with operas that can also secure the capacity for 26 performances on the floating stage. While Sobotka's predecessor David Pountney primarily showed rarities in the Festspielhaus, the new director decided to also show works from the current repertoire in exceptional productions there. It started with the Offenbach opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann , which has already been shown twice on the floating stage , staged by Stefan Herheim . In 2016 the directors presented a rediscovery: Amleto by Franco Faccio (1840–1891).

The workshop stage and the Theater am Kornmarkt , where a cycle of Mozart's three Da Ponte operas was scheduled to begin in 2015 , will also be used. The director also announced a commissioned work by Thomas Larcher .

2020

The 2020 Bregenz Festival was canceled on May 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent ordinances issued by the Austrian federal government. On the floating stage in Bregenz, performances usually take place in front of 7,000 people. The commercial director Michael Diem stated that playing for only 1,000 spectators at a time was "economically not feasible". Festival President Hans-Peter Metzler regretted this step.

The recapitulation of Verdi's Rigoletto on the floating stage planned for 2020 and the new staging of Nero by Arrigo Boito have been postponed to the coming year.
