Gábor Bretz (born March 16, 1974 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian opera singer with a bass voice .

life and work

Bretz began his singing studies with Stephan Czovek in Los Angeles and subsequently attended the Béla Bartók Conservatory and the Franz Liszt Music Academy in his hometown. He took master classes with Julia Hamari , Ralf Döring , Éva Marton and Jewgeni Nesterenko , took part in general competitions and won prizes. Since his singing diploma from the Liszt Academy, the singer has appeared regularly at the Hungarian State Opera , where he has developed a broad repertoire, which mainly includes Mozart and Verdi roles, but ranges from Monteverdi to Wagner , Strauss and Bartók . In Don Giovanni he sings alternately the title role, the Leporello and the Masetto, in Bizet's Carmen alternately Zuniga and Escamillo. His most important Verdi roles include the Banco (in Macbeth ), Sparafucile (in Rigoletto ), the High Priest of Babylon (in Nabucco ) and Il Re (in Aida ).

The singer performs regularly in Austria. Bretz made his debut as Antonio in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Salzburg Festival in 2007 . At the Stadttheater Klagenfurt he was seen and heard as Seneca in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea , as Daland in Wagner's Fliegendem Holländer and as Sparafucile in Verdi's Rigoletto . At the Wiener Festwochen in 2013 he took over the Ferrando in Philipp Stölzl's enthusiastically received Trovatore production and in 2015 the title role in Andrea Breth's interpretation of Duke Bluebeard's Castle .

Bretz has conquered the major opera stages step by step. He was hired by the Komische Oper Berlin , sang at the Opéra de Rennes , the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, made his debut in 2013 as Sparafucile at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and in 2014 as Gurnemanz (in Wagner's Parsifal ) at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna . In the same year she also made her first appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London (as Collins in Puccini's La Bohème ), at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (as Escamillo) and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (also as Escamillo). In autumn 2015 he made his role debut as King Philip in the French version of Verdi's Don Carlos at the Hamburg State Opera . It staged Peter Konwitschny , it conducted Renato Palumbo . The production was taken over by the Vienna State Opera .

Gábor Bretz is also a sought-after concert singer, particularly for the solo parts in masses, oratorios and requies by Bach , Haydn , Mozart , Rossini , Verdi and Puccini . He has also appeared in Tippett's A Child of Our Time and in Berlioz ' L'enfance du Christ (conducted by Sylvain Cambreling ). He was one of the four soloists in Beethoven's Ninth at the gala concert of the Wiener Symphoniker on May 8, 2015 at Heldenplatz in Vienna , the celebration of joy on the occasion of the anniversary of Austria's liberation from the Nazi regime . It was conducted by Philippe Jordan .
