Gesine Völlm (born 1966 in Sindelfingen ) is a German costume designer who works mainly with the directors Philipp Himmelmann and Stefan Herheim .

life and work

After an apprenticeship as a tailor, Völlm studied set and costume design with Professor Jürgen Rose at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. After a time as a freelance artist, she worked as Anna Viebrock's assistant stage set at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. Since 1998 she has designed the costumes (and occasionally the stage sets) for directors such as Karin Beier and Barbara Frey , Anselm Weber and Jossi Wieler at numerous houses in German-speaking countries, as well as for the choreographer Joachim Schlömer in Basel and Lucerne.

Since 2005 she has been working increasingly for opera productions, continuously with Philipp Himmelmann, and since 2008 also with Stefan Herheim. With Himmelmann she worked in Zagreb, Nancy and Vienna, Bonn, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Hanover, from baroque to bel canto to operetta, including Don Quichotte , La finta giardiniera and Norma in Bremen, Die Fledermaus am Theater an der Wien and Manon Lescaut at the Hamburg State Opera . Two Wagner projects by the Herheim / Scheele / Völlm team, both with Daniele Gatti at the podium, attracted particular attention : in 2008 a Parsifal as a journey through German history at the Bayreuth Festival and in 2013 The Mastersingers of Nuremberg as a dream tale by Hans Sachs at the Salzburg Festival . The bulky Parsifal was also broadcast live in numerous cinemas in German-speaking countries in 2012. The Meistersinger production, which was acclaimed by the audience and the press, is also to be shown at La Scala in Milan , the Paris Opéra and the New York Met .

While the stage and costume designer Heike Scheele has been working with the Norwegian director Stefan Herheim since 1999, the Bayreuth Parsifal was Völlm's first cooperation with Herheim and Scheele in 2008. She was voted costume designer of the year in the Opernwelt critics' survey . A number of other projects by the scenic trio followed: 2008 Rusalka at the Theater de la Monnaie in Brussels (then also in Graz, Dresden and Barcelona), in 2009 Lohengrin at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin and Der Rosenkavalier at the State Theater Stuttgart (with Rebecca Ringst as set designer), in 2010 Lulu at the Royal Copenhagen Opera (then also in Oslo and Dresden), 2011 Salome at the Salzburg Easter Festival and Eugen Onegin at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam (with Philipp Fürhofer as set designer), 2012 Serse at the Komische Oper Berlin (then also in Düsseldorf and Graz) and Manon Lescaut at the Graz Opera (then also in Hamburg, Dresden and Essen), 2013 Les vêpres siciliennes at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London (again with Fürhofer as set designer, then also in Copenhagen).

In 2015 she worked for the first time with director Johannes Erath on the new production of Carl Maria von Weber's Euryanthe at the Frankfurt Opera . In 2016 she designed the costumes for the rediscovered opera Amleto by Franco Faccio at the Bregenz Festival . It staged Olivier Tambosi , it conducted Paolo Carignani , the stage set designed Frank Philipp Schlößmann .
