Philipp Himmelmann (* 1962 ) is a German opera director.

education

Himmelmann, son of the archaeologist Nikolaus Himmelmann , first studied musicology and languages ​​at the University of Bonn and then from 1983 to 1987 he studied music theater directing at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater , which he graduated with honors. He also studied singing in Hamburg and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London . During his studies, he received grants from the Migros Foundation in Zurich , the German National Academic Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service .

Engagements

Philipp Himmelmann began his career as an opera director with independent ensembles in Hamburg , Berlin and Stuttgart . In 1989 he staged for the first time at the Lucerne Theater , where he was also a member of the directorate from 1992 to 1995 and presented several productions in the following years. From 1996 to 1998 he was senior director of the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken .
