The Haydn Festival (also Haydn Festival Eisenstadt or Haydn Festival ) was an annual festival in Eisenstadt , Austria until 2017 , which was dedicated to maintaining the oeuvre of Joseph Haydn .

The sponsoring association “Burgenland Haydn Festival” was founded in 1986 by the Province of Burgenland and the Free City of Eisenstadt. The Haydn Festival was a bearer of the Haydn tradition and a center of international Haydn care. Walter Reicher was artistic director from 1988 to 2018 . Since 1989 they have organized their annual festival in September, the “International Haydn Days”.

The founders of the Haydn Festival decided to keep the archive, library and collections open for all kinds of objects that could contribute to a better understanding of Joseph Haydn and his music. The Haydn Festival cooperated closely with the "International Joseph Haydn Private Foundation Eisenstadt". They acted not only as a festival, but also as a hub and competence center for all questions relating to Joseph Haydn (supervision of academic work, publication of books and media, organization of themed trips, establishment of Haydn societies worldwide, development of educational programs, organization of symposia, etc.).

Haydn Hall in Esterházy Palace

The name Joseph Haydn is inextricably linked with Eisenstadt. From 1761 onwards, Haydn worked for more than forty years as Princely Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court. He wrote most of his masterpieces here. Many of the places of activity at that time - such as the Haydn Hall in Esterházy Palace , famous for its excellent acoustics - have been preserved to this day and formed the stylish setting for the Haydn Festival until 2016.

At the center of the Haydn Festival was the complete works of the genius loci Joseph Haydn. In addition to his typical genres such as the symphony and the string quartet, operas, oratorios and other compositions were also performed. Great attention was paid to the diverse relationships between these works when designing the respective festival program. Accompanying exhibitions such as “Ask for Haydn - Views from the Present” in 2013 (project room of the Landesgalerie Burgenland) were organized regularly.

At the same time as the Haydn Festival, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic was founded by Ádám Fischer . The orchestra-in-residence of the Haydn Festival has since also directed by him.

The central venue was the Haydn Hall of Esterházy Palace: a hall in which Haydn himself worked during his lifetime and which is considered one of the most important places of activity of Haydn. The twelve venues also included, for example, the mountain church , the covered inner courtyard of the Burgenland State Museum , St. Martin's Cathedral and Forchtenstein Castle , some of which are also “original locations” where Haydn worked in the 18th century.

In September 2015 it became known that the 28th International Haydn Days in 2016 will probably be the last in Esterhazy Palace. The 29th Haydn Festival will be held as “HaydnLandTage” at original locations in Burgenland, Lower Austria and Vienna and will also include a musicological symposium in Eisenstadt. At the beginning of August 2018 it was announced that the Haydn Days would not take place in 2018.

From May to November 2016, the festival played in the Haydn Hall in Esterházy Palace with the four-part concert cycle “The Haydn Academy - The Great Mozart Cycle” - and the Landesgalerie Burgenland with the four-part concert cycle “Haydn Chamber Ensemble - Haydn a European”.

The best Haydn interpreters created their own programs for the International Haydn Festival , which were only performed at the original locations at the Haydn Festival . This triad of artist-location-programming established the festival's popularity.

Together with the “International Joseph Haydn Private Foundation Eisenstadt” and the cultural department of the Province of Burgenland, the Haydn Festival regularly organized international musicological symposia as part of the International Haydn Days. Concert cycles

The Haydn Festival held concerts in the palace's concert halls throughout the year. It was part of the philosophy of her concert series to perform works by Joseph Haydn as well as the entire musical literature from the baroque to the present day.

"Haydn Academy"

In 1992 Anton Gabmayer founded his own orchestra - "The Haydn Academy". The aim of the project was to perform all 100 & 7 Haydn symphonies in the Haydn Hall over a period of nine years. After completing this project, each year had a different theme. From 2015 the Haydn Academy will perform all of WA Mozart's symphonies in the “great Mozart cycle” until 2019.

"Haydn Chamber Ensemble"

Joseph Haydn dealt intensively with chamber music throughout his life. The Haydn Festival put the piano trio at the center of its own concert series (since 1995). The “Haydn Trio Eisenstadt” played at the beginning of the series from 1995 to 2008, in 2012 the “Haydn Piano Trio” resumed the cycle and from 2014 the “Haydn Chamber Ensemble” continued it. As part of this cycle, premieres by contemporary composers were played at every concert.

Joseph Haydn's total oeuvre includes 814 works (plus 400 folk song arrangements). Since the Haydn Days began in 1989, almost all of Haydn's works have been presented live several times. Among other things, the following were performed:

In the “Haydn Year” 2009 (200th anniversary of his death), among other things, all twelve completed masses by Haydn as well as all Haydn symphonies as part of the “100 & 7 Symphonies” project were performed throughout the year . On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death, the Haydn Festival launched the “World Creation” project.
