Roy Goodman

Roy Goodman (born January 26, 1951 in Guildford ) is a British conductor and violinist specializing in historical performance practice .

In 1963, at the age of twelve, he was already performing as a boy soprano soloist in Gregorio Allegri's “Miserere” under the direction of David Willcocks .

Roy Goodman graduated from the Royal College of Music . As a soloist and concertmaster, he played between 1975 and 1985 under conductors such as Charles Mackerras , Roger Norrington and Simon Rattle . He was at times the viola d'amore soloist of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Philharmonia Orchestra . On the baroque violin he performed as a soloist under Frans Brüggen , Philippe Herreweghe , Christopher Hogwood , René Jacobs , Trevor Pinnock and Ton Koopman .

As a conductor, he often leads the baroque orchestras from the harpsichord or with the violin in hand. He was founder and artistic director of the “Brandenburg Consort” from 1975 to 2001. He was associate director of the Parley of Instruments and permanent guest conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra . For several years he directed the “ European Union Baroque Orchestra ” (EUBO), which consists of young music college graduates, with which he recorded several sound carriers. In total, he directed more than a hundred different orchestras and ensembles. Since 2001, Goodman has acted several times as a conductor at the Concours Reine Elisabeth in baroque singing. He is also highly regarded as an opera conductor.

A total of more than 120 recordings have been made under his direction, spanning a repertoire from Claudio Monteverdi to Aaron Copland .
