David Willcocks
David Valentine Willcocks (born December 30, 1919 in Newquay , Cornwall , † September 17, 2015 in Cambridge , Cambridgeshire ) was a British choirmaster , composer and organist . He received numerous honors and awards, including military ones.
He studied organ at King's College (Cambridge) and was organist and choirmaster at Salisbury Cathedral , then Worcester Cathedral . He was Music Director of the Orchestra and Choir of King's College Cambridge from 1957 to 1973.
Under his direction, the King's College Choir performed Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in 1963, first in Perugia , then in Milan and Venice .
The selection of Christmas choral works called 100 Carols for Choirs ("100 Christmas and Hymns for Choirs") he published together with John Rutter at Oxford University Press ( ISBN 978-0-19-353227-4 ). It contains numerous arrangements and also compositions by him.
