history

The medieval cloister

Construction began in 1084. Only the first four naves of the crypt have survived from this first building .

In 1218 the retro choir and the Marienkapelle were consecrated . In 1224 the construction of the choir and east transept began. The relationship with the Beverley choir is clear: four-pass pillars with exposed services , richly tiered triforium and arcade arches . The tomb of King Johann Ohneland (died 1216) from around 1225 to 1230 is located here. The nave was built between 1317 and 1327, the vaults of the central nave were completed in 1377. The crossing tower followed in the years from 1358 to 1374. The urns of British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and his wife are buried in the western part of the nave .

The chapter house from around 1125 was originally round. In the second half of the 14th century it was encased in a Gothic style. The Lady Chapel was completely renovated in 1855. The northern part of the cloister was completed in 1374, the complex as a whole not until 1438.
