Alain Erlande-Brandenburg (born August 2, 1937 in Luxeuil ; † June 6, 2020 ) was a French art historian who dealt with Gothic and Romanesque art .

Life

Erlande-Brandenburg first went to school in Marseille and then to the Lycée Henri IV in Paris, before studying at the École nationale des chartes with a degree as archivist and palaeographer . He also studied at the École du Louvre , where he received his doctorate in 1971. From 1967 he was curator at the Musée de Cluny and from 1980 to 1987 chief curator and director of the Museum of the Renaissance in the Castle of Écouen . From 1991 to 1994 he was director of the Musée de Cluny. From 1999 to 2005 he was director of the Museum of the Renaissance.

In addition, from 1974 to 2005 he was directeur d'études at the École pratique des hautes études (4th section). He also taught medieval architecture as a professor at the École de Chaillot and museum studies at the École du Louvre. From 1991 to 2000 he was professor of archeology and art history of the Middle Ages at the École des chartes. From 1994 to 1998 he was director of the French National Archives .

In 1988 he was inspector general of the French museums. From 1985 to 1994 he was President of the Société française d'archéologie .
