from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deon van der Walt ( July 28, 1958 in Cape Town , South Africa - November 29, 2005 with Paarl ) was a South African opera singer ( lyric tenor ) who had his first residence in Switzerland since 1988 .

Life

Deon van der Walt studied at Stellenbosch University, while still a student he made his debut at the Cape Town Opera as Jacquino in Fidelio . He was one of the most important lyric tenors. He achieved world fame above all as a Rossini and Mozart interpreter. He worked at the largest opera houses and concert halls in the world.

He has also sung at many international festivals, for example at the Salzburg Festival , where he sang Belmonte in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail under Horst Stein , Ferrando in Così fan tutte under Riccardo Muti and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte under Sir Georg Solti and Bernard Haitink .

The opera singer was killed in a family drama at the age of 47. There was a heated argument at the family-run South African winery north of Cape Town, in the course of which the 78-year-old father shot his son. Then the father turned the gun on himself. This was followed by disputes over the management of the winery.

Deon van der Walt had already relieved his father of the management the year before.
