Friedrich Kleinhapl

Friedrich Kleinhapl (born July 14, 1965 in Graz ) is an Austrian cellist .

Life

Friedrich Kleinhapl was trained by Philippe Muller in Paris after completing his studies at the Graz University of Music with Janis Chronopoulos. He was strongly influenced and inspired by working with musicians such as Paul Tortelier , Claudio Abbado, Lord Yehudi Menuhin and Tibor Varga.

With the CD recording of Friedrich Gulda's cello concerto with wind orchestra in 2001, Friedrich Kleinhapl took his first step towards contemporary music. In the following years he gained a great reputation in this field, for example through premieres of the Fantasy for Cello and Big Band by Ed Neumeister (with the Jazz Big Band Graz ), the cello concerts by Christoph Cech , Peter Herbert and Dirk D'Ase or by Johannes Berauer's concert with vocal ensemble and percussion. In addition to standard literature and the works of contemporary composers, he also devotes himself to unusual repertoire such as the cello concertos by Korngold , Honegger , Rosza or Rota .

He appears as a soloist and chamber musician in many metropolises in Europe such as London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin and many other cities, as well as in the USA, Canada, Japan, China, Mexico and at the Fajr Festival in Tehran. Friedrich Kleinhapl was a. a. can also be heard at the Wiener Festwochen, the Wiener Klangbogen, the Bregenz Festival, the Styriarte Festival or the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival.

The outstanding orchestral concerts so far include appearances under Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky Orchestra, under Fabio Luisi, Ulf Schirmer and Michael Güttler with the Chamber Orchestra of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, or with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Friedrich Kleinhapl was also invited to solo and duo evenings, for example, to the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Paris Invalides Cathedral, the Vienna Musikverein and the London Wigmore Hall .

Friedrich Kleinhapl has been playing in a duo with the German pianist Andreas Woyke since 2003 . This collaboration has so far resulted in five CD recordings, joint concert tours to the USA, Brazil and China, as well as appearances with, for example, Christa Ludwig , Gérard Caussé and Peter Schmidl. In 2008 the duo's CD “Rachmaninow Franck Sonatas” received the international “Supersonic Award 2008” ( Pizzicato ), in 2009 the CD “Beethoven Sonatas 1-3” received the international “Excellentia Award”.

In addition to his concert activities, Friedrich Kleinhapl took over the artistic direction of the ORF concert series “Eggenberger Schlosskonzerte” from 2003 to 2006.

There is a "culture partnership" between Friedrich Kleinhapl and HYPO Steiermark: since 2003, artists and the bank have been accompanying each other in their development.

Since June 2008 Friedrich Kleinhapl has been playing a violoncello by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini , Piacenza 1743 "ex von Zweygberg" from the collection of valuable instruments of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. Before that, from 1998 to 2008 he played the cello "Giovanni Tononi, Bologna 1681" from the same collection.
