Wolfgang Schulz (flautist)

Wolfgang Schulz (born February 26, 1946 in Linz , Upper Austria ; † March 28, 2013 in Vienna ) was an Austrian concert flutist and university professor. He was solo flutist with the Vienna Philharmonic and professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

Life

Wolfgang Schulz, older brother of the violinist Gerhard Schulz , received his first flute lessons from 1956 with Christiane Schwamberger and Willi Bauer at the Linz Music School, followed by training with Rudolf Leitner at the Bruckner Conservatory . From 1960 to 1964 Schulz studied concert flute with Hans Reznicek at what was then the Vienna Music Academy . In 1964 he won the audition at the Volksoper Vienna , was the first flutist in the orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper until 1970, from September 1, 1970 he switched to the State Opera Orchestra and on March 1, 1973 he finally became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic .

From 1979 Wolfgang Schulz taught concert flute at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . His students included Gisela Mashayekhi-Beer , Christian Landsmann, Elizabeth Pring, Günther Voglmayr, Clemens Gadenstätter , Krzysztof Kaczka , Michael Martin Kofler , Karin Leitner and Helmut Trawöger .

In 1983 the "Ensemble Wien-Berlin" was founded, a woodwind quintet made up of soloists from the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic , to which he belonged throughout his life. From 1996 he directed his own festival “Bonheur musical” in Lourmarin, France . In 2000, Wolfgang Schulz founded the musicians' ensemble "Camerata Schulz", which appears in a changing line-up and to which some members of the traditional family of musicians belong. With his son Matthias Schulz, also a flautist and since 2005 engaged in the stage orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, he has performed together again and again.

Schulz died of a serious illness on March 28, 2013 at the age of 67 in the Vienna General Hospital .
