Roberto Paternostro

Roberto Paternostro (born March 30, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian conductor .

Life

The son of an Italian and an Austrian studied at the University of Music in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky . He later studied in Hamburg with György Ligeti and Christoph von Dohnányi . From 1978 to 1984 he was Herbert von Karajan's assistant .

He made his first international appearance in 1985 in the Arena of Verona .

Works by Richard Wagner ( Der Ring des Nibelungen , Parsifal , Tristan and Isolde , Tannhäuser , Lohengrin ), Giuseppe Verdis , Giacomo Puccinis and Richard Strauss ' ( Elektra , Der Rosenkavalier , Ariadne ) as well as new productions by the Three sisters ( Péter Eötvös ), Sergei Prokofiev's love for the three oranges and the Shostakovich version by Boris Godunov .

Paternostro had international appearances at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich ( Macbeth , The Bartered Bride , Eugen Onegin ), the German State Opera Berlin ( Falstaff ), at the Semperoper Dresden ( La Bohème ), at the Teatro La Fenice Venice , the Teatro Liceu Barcelona , at the Volksoper Vienna , the opera houses of Madrid , Genoa , Parma , Naples , Oslo , Seville and Budapest .

In the symphonic area, conductors and recordings were made with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne , the Munich Philharmonic , the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra , the NHK Tokyo Symphony Orchestra , the NDR Philharmonic Hanover , the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin , the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the DSO Berlin . In the 2007/2008 season, Paternostro made his debut with a Beethoven program in Toronto, and further concerts have taken him to Munich, Palermo, Budapest, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. In the 2010/11 season, Paternostro made successful debuts in Cincinnati and at the Prague State Opera (season opening as part of the Verdi Festival with Aida ) as well as the resumption of Carmen at the Vienna Volksoper and Mahler's 3rd Symphony in Budapest in 2011 .

In October 2010, the announcement of the Bayreuth guest performance initiated by Paternostro with the Israel Chamber Orchestra and the planned performance of Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll sparked heated discussions in Israel, where Wagner's music is not played publicly. International media coverage and the founding of the first Wagner Society in Israel in November 2010 were the result. The concert took place on July 26, 2011 without the announced disruptions and received standing ovations.

In October 2011 Paternostro returned to Toronto with a contemporary oratorio, in December 2011 he directed the premiere of Rigoletto at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania and the revival of Hansel and Gretel in Vienna.

The commitments in the 2012/13 season include a. the season opening of the Mannheim Academy Concerts (Beethovens Pastorale , Richard Strauss ' Don Quixote ), concerts in Milan (Strauss' Violin Concerto, Beethovens Pastorale ), subscription concerts of the Israel Chamber Orchestra in Tel Aviv, the resumption of Puccini's Il tabarro / Gianni Schicchi in Vienna and the Premiere of Richard Strauss' Salome at the Palm Beach Opera. For the first time in Israel: Roberto Paternostro leads a conducting workshop in cooperation with the German Music Council and the Goethe Institute.

Paternostro made his debut at the Teatro Colón in 2012 with Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen ("Colón-Ring") staged by Valentina Carrasco (released on DVD by C Major), followed by Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (with Erwin Schrott ) in 2013 and Verdi's in 2014 Falstaff (with Ambrogio Maestri) and Strauss' Elektra (with Linda Watson) and 2015 Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci (director and singer: José Cura ).

  • On October 14th, 2012, Roberto Paternostro was awarded the ECHO Klassik 2012 special prize for his concert with the Israel Chamber Orchestra in Bayreuth on July 26th, 2011. The Federal Association of the Music Industry wrote: “With your decision to play Wagner's music in Bayreuth, Roberto Paternostro and the Israel Chamber Orchestra succeed in overcoming boundaries and building a bridge to dialogue.
