José Cura (born December 5, 1962 in Rosario , Argentina ) is an Argentine opera singer ( tenor ). He is considered one of the most important interpreters of verismo .

Life

José Cura initially received guitar lessons, although he had already started singing at the age of 12. At the age of 15 he made his debut as a choir conductor. From 1978 he studied composition with Carlos Castro and piano with Zulma Cabrera. He continued his studies at the State University of Rosario and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires , where he studied singing as well as conducting. Due to incorrect training methods, José Cura gave up his vocal studies. Ultimately, Horacio Amauri convinced him to train his voice with a new singing technique, thus paving the way for a world career.

In 1991 he moved to Europe with his family, who lived in Verona and near Paris. He trained his voice with Vittorio Terranova , who helped him to refine his Italian operatic style. He made his debut in Verona in the opera Pollicino by Hans Werner Henze . José Cura's big breakthrough came in March 1993 in Trieste. There he sang the role of Jan in Miss Julie . Cura made his Met debut in 1999 as Turiddu in the opera Cavalleria rusticana .

His artistic path took him to many of the world's major opera stages. In addition to those already mentioned in Milan, Genoa, Verona, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, San Francisco, Tokyo, Dublin, Vienna, Amsterdam, Sydney, Melbourne, London etc., his appearance at the Hamburg Opera in 2003 should be emphasized. There he first conducted Cavalleria rusticana and then, after the break, sang Canio in Pagliacci .

For his artistic merits, José Cura was awarded an honorary professor by the Caece University in Buenos Aires in 1999 , and he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown. In 2000 he was knighted Chevalier de l'Ordre du Cedre by the Lebanese government .

Cura is a popular song and concert singer. In 2001 he went on a concert tour through Japan. He has also given concerts in Holland, Sweden, Italy, Russia, Hungary, Germany and Taiwan, among others. José Cura also works as a conductor and director.

Cura is married and has three children. He lives in Madrid with his family.
