The Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville is the work of architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín . It was inaugurated in 1991. It is located on the Torre del Oro and the bullring Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería on the Guadalquivir .

history

Despite the city's more than 150 opera stages, Seville did not have facilities for large-scale productions. The Teatro de San Fernando , which opened in 1847 and demolished in 1973, was closest to meeting the requirements. Hundreds of operas have been performed there and gained international fame in the 1860s.

In 1985, the Parliament of the Province of Seville , chaired by Ángel del Pino, bought the land on which the Maestranza de Artillería was located. In the Middle Ages these buildings served as a shipyard. The Provincial Council then launched a public tender for the construction of a multifunctional auditorium. The architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín were commissioned with the execution in 1987. The cost of construction was 1.6 billion pesetas (9.6 million euros). The theater seats 1,800 people. Work began on February 10, 1987. The provincial parliament, the city administration and the government of the autonomous region of Andalusia financed the construction. The old Maestranza buildings have been preserved at the back of the site.

The theater was inaugurated in 1991 by Queen Sofía . Since then, famous personalities of music have performed there, for example Montserrat Caballé , Plácido Domingo , Alfredo Kraus and Luciano Pavarotti . On December 5, 1991, the bronze statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which Ronaldo Campos had created, was inaugurated on the main facade.

Semana Santa has been celebrated in the Teatro del la Maestranza since 1993 . Since 2003 the medals of Andalusia and the honors as Hijo Predilecto de Andalucía have been awarded here every February .

The main hall has a cylindrical shape with a dome of 47.20 m and a stage opening of 18.9 m × 9.5 m. The auditorium is divided into parquet , two terraces, a balcony and the top tier, the so-called Paraíso . In 2007 the stage was doubled from 800 m² to 1600 m². This was achieved through a rear extension. The renovation cost 10.3 million euros.

Thanks to its variable acoustics, the building is suitable for many musical events, from opera to classical concerts and solo concerts to flamenco and zarzuelas .

In addition to the large hall, the building contains rooms for experimental theater, exhibitions, conferences and a center for cultural research. Operas are performed on a smaller scale in the Sala Manuel García .

The Theatro de la Maestranza is the seat of the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville . It accompanies the opera performances and regularly performs concert series. When it was expanded in 2007, it got its own rehearsal room.
