Manuel del Populo Vicente García (born January 21, 1775 in Seville , † June 9, 1832 in Paris ) was a Spanish tenor and singing teacher and opera composer .

Life

García trained as a choirboy at the Cathedral of Seville, made his debut at the age of 17 as a tenorist at the theater in Cádiz and then worked on various stages in Spain as a singer, conductor and composer of operettas.

In 1808 he went to Paris, where he appeared in the Opéra-bouffe and caused a sensation with his dramatically animated lecture. He was equally applauded in the big cities of Italy as well as in London, where he was employed as the first tenor at the royal theater in 1824, after having previously introduced the Parisians to the Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini and thus won the hearts of the French would have.

In 1826 he went to America as an opera entrepreneur, where he achieved brilliant artistic and material successes, but on his journey home he had the misfortune of losing his fortune to a band of robbers on the way from Mexico to the USA near Veracruz .

When he arrived in Paris, he devoted himself exclusively to singing and trained a long line of excellent dramatic singers until his death on June 9, 1832, among them his daughters Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot-García . In 1831 he wrote the salon opera Le cinesi for his students based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio . His son Manuel Patricio Rodríguez García was also a singing teacher and baritone .
