Laurence Dale (born September 10, 1957 in Sussex ) is a British opera singer ( tenor ), conductor and artistic director .

Life

Laurence Dale studied singing from 1976 to 1980 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Rudolf Piernay . In 1980 he took part in the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg with Richard Miller. Dale also took lessons from Peter Pears , Ernst Haefliger and Seth Riggs .

He made his debut at the English National Opera in 1981 as Camille in The Merry Widow . Until 1991, he performed internationally at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris , at the Theater Basel , at the Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival as part of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam , at the La Monnaie opera house in Brussels and the Paris Opera , the Zurich Opera House , the Stuttgart State Theater , the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto and the Vienna State Opera .

Dale was dedicated to researching and reviving 19th century French operas. In this context he sang the Gustave from Gustave III in 1991 . ou Le bal masqué and in 1989 Joseph from the opera of the same name by Étienne-Nicolas Méhul . Jacques Lonchampt, the music critic of Le Monde at the time , wrote that Dale had all the qualities of a bronze tenor, that he sang flawlessly, nobly and poignantly. During his time as artistic director of the Opéra-Théâtre Metz , Dale Gustave III. ou Le bal masqué itself in a modern scene.

Laurence Dale has withdrawn from the stage as a singer for health reasons. From 2001 to 2004 Dale was artistic director of the Opéra-Théâtre Metz and set among others The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten , Powder Her Face by Thomas Adès , The Land of Smiles by Franz Lehár , The Huguenots by Giacomo Meyerbeer , and an in French version of the opera Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi based on Gustave III: ou le bal masqué by Eugène Scribe staged .

From 2005 to 2008 Dale was Artistic Director at Opera Africa in Pretoria . There he staged the Aida in 2008 and also took the place of conductor. In the same year he staged Zar und Zimmermann by Albert Lortzing at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck . In 2009 Dale directed performances of Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss for the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and the Opéra de Monaco . In 2011 he directed The Human Voice by Francis Poulenc and The Spanish Hour by Maurice Ravel for the National Reisopera in Enschede . Since 2001 Dale has also led the Evian Festival Orchestra as part of the Escales musicales in Évian-les-Bains.

Awards

Laurence Dale won the Mozart Week Prize at the Mozarteum in 1980 . In 1982 he received the Médaille de la Ville de Paris .
