Opéra de Monaco alias: Opéra de Monte Carlo, also Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo , is the opera house in the Principality of Monaco . It is a neo-manian building by Charles Garnier .

history

Prince Charles III had the opera house built with the Société des bains de mer (SBM) in 1878 as a splendid extension of the casino to represent musical opera works. The district that the reigning prince redesigned was named Monte Carlo after him on July 1, 1866 . 2000 workers worked day and night. The major construction site was completed after eight months and 16 days. Garnier also had the employees from Paris at their side in Monaco. Jules Thomas made the sculptures in the inner vaults , Jean Gautherin the scene frames, Felix Chabaud the bas-reliefs of the pilasters . Other artists involved were Gustave Doré , Charles Henri Joseph Cordier , Seraph Denécheau and, for painting, Gustave Boulanger . In 1879 the Salle Garnier was opened as a private theater for the prince and his family. This hall is supposed to be a miniature replica of the one built between 1860 and 1875, commissioned by Napoleon III. started to be the Opéra Garnier , the Opéra National de Paris. Judging by the external facades, Garnier has created an individual solution for each building.

The façade of the Garnier Hall is the Port Hercule , the harbor, looking. The facade decoration includes various sculpted elements and mosaics by Facchina in Venice . The 35 meter high dome is supported by three large arcades . It is made of copper , is supported by a steel frame designed by Gustave Eiffel and flanked by two towers crowned with lanterns. The foundation walls are made of stones from la Turbie . A wing each adjoins the central part to the east and west. The entrance protected for the “Prince Souverain” is in the western wing. The 2000 m² large and 25 meter high hall has 524 seats. It was opened on January 25, 1879. At this event, Sarah Bernhardt appeared as a nymph . The first opera was the world premiere of Robert Planquette's Le Chevalier Gaston on February 8, 1879. On February 18, 1893, Hector Berlioz 's "dramatic legend" La damnation de Faust (based on Goethe's Faust ) was staged here .

In 1897, the architect Henri Schmit enlarged the stage and improved the view for the audience. In 1904 the vaults were increased. The Garnier building was renovated from 2001 to 2005. During this renovation, the pilaster reliefs by Félix Chabaud, removed in 1960, were discovered. On November 19, 2005, the reopening for the enthronement of Prince Albert II took place with the staging of Gioachino Rossini's trip to Reims from 1825.

The opera house is managed by the builder Société des bains de mer (SBM).
