Peter Pears

Sir Peter Neville Luard Pears Kt CBE (born June 22, 1910 in Farnham ; † April 3, 1986 in Aldeburgh ) was a British opera singer ( tenor ) and long-time partner of the composer Benjamin Britten . He received his accolade in 1978.

He trained as an organist at Keble College , Oxford , but left without a degree. Between 1933 and 1934 he took up singing studies at the Royal College of Music . Pears embodied u. a. the title character of Peter Grimes and co-wrote Britten's Midsummer Night 's Dream . Britten's arrangements of English folk songs and his serenade for tenor, horn and string orchestra were tailor- made for him.

His voice has been described by critics as "dry" and "white" at times. In fact, it seems to have lost a lot in the recording. There is no doubt, however, that he had unusually good articulation and agility in his voice, which Britten made frequent use of. A joint recording of Schubert's Winterreise testifies to his high art of declamation.
