Albert William Ketèlbey [ ˈɔː bət ˈwɪl jəm kəˈtelbiː ] (born August 9, 1875 in Birmingham , † November 26, 1959 in Cowes , Isle of Wight ) was an English composer and conductor .

Life

Albert Ketèlbey was already composing a piano sonata at the age of eleven , which was praised by Edward Elgar, and at the age of thirteen won a scholarship to study composition at Trinity College of Music in London . In 1891 he became organist at St. John's Church at Wimbledon and in 1897 musical director of the Vaudeville Theater, in addition to music director of Columbia Gramophone. Soon he published his first compositions, some under the pseudonyms Anton Vodorinski and Raoul Clifford, and created piano arrangements of works by various composers.

Ketèlbey became famous for his short, very picturesque orchestral pieces for "Light Music", but he also composed a large number of accompanying music for silent films . He worked as a conductor all over Europe. The success of his works later enabled him to enjoy a comfortable retired life on the Isle of Wight; There he indulged his other passion, the game of billiards, in addition to composing . He died on this island in 1959.
