Time in Space was a German jazz rock and fusion band from Dortmund . The formation was "one of the first groups in West Germany to tread creative paths to bring together jazz and rock traditions with their own accents in intelligent, groovy , soulful , danceable popular music."

The group, which was founded and led by Wolf Escher in Dortmund in 1972, was mainly at home in the Hot Club Dortmund and the successor club Jazz Domicil in the 1970s . The ensemble appeared in various formations at the Ruhr Festival and other festivals (such as the 3rd Dortmund Jazz Night ), in music schools and in many jazz clubs in Germany and Europe; so she played in Munich for a week in a row. A concert recording of the WDR made the group known. The line-up of the band consisted of well-known jazz and rock musicians. In 1981 the band split up.

In memory of the "Time in Space" founder, composer, arranger and organizer Wolf Escher who died in 2016, a concert evening with former members of the group "Time in Space" was organized in Dortmund's Jazz-domicil on February 3rd in 2017.

The name of the band alludes to the concept of relativistic space-time , the union of space and time in a uniform four-dimensional structure, to the interaction (fusion) of musical phrases, tempos and dynamics of the ensemble and soloists in a musical continuum.
