Heiner Wiberny (* 1944 as Karl-Heinz Wiberny ) is a German jazz saxophonist and flutist.

Live and act

Wiberny first studied Romance studies, geography and school music in Cologne , but also composition with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Pavel Blatný . A larger audience first noticed him as a guest of Pierre Courbois ' Association PC (LP “Erna Morena”), but also as a soloist in symphony orchestras at performances of new music ( Hans-Joachim Hespos ). Since 1974 he has been the lead alto saxophonist at WDR Cologne, initially in Harald Banter's Media Band . In 1976 he went on a tour through Africa with the New Jazz Ensemble of Herbert Joos and Bernd Konrad . From 1981 to 2009 he was a member of the WDR Big Band Cologne . He also performs with the Atlanta Jazz Band . He also worked with Kurt Edelhagen , Peter Herbolzheimer , Paul Kuhn , Manfred Schoof , Jasper van't Hof and Markus Stockhausen . In 1982 a jazz-meets- flamenco project, which he published together with the Cologne guitarist Wolfgang Gerhard, was nominated for the German Record Prize.

Wiberny said goodbye to official working life with the WDR Big Band on August 28, 2009 with the Heiner's Music concert in Cologne's Stadtgarten.

He is also active as a composer and honorary professor at the Cologne University of Music .
