Thomas Fey (born November 9, 1960 ) is a German conductor and pianist .

Career

Fey studied piano and conducting at the State University for Music and Performing Arts Mannheim , and received his further conducting training from Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Leonard Bernstein, among others .

As a student he founded the Heidelberg Motettenchor (1985) and the Schlierbach Chamber Orchestra (1987), from which the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra emerged in 1993 . As the conductor of these ensembles he has given concerts in European countries as well as in North and South America, thus establishing the reputation of his ensemble as one of the leading historically oriented orchestras of the present. The focus of his repertoire is on the works of the Baroque , Viennese Classic and early German Romanticism . Soloists such as Rudolf Buchbinder , Wilhelm Bruns , Nelson Freire , Bernd Glemser , Cyprien Katsaris , Fazıl Say , Gerrit Zitterbart and Thomas Zehetmair give regular concerts with Fey and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.

Since 1991 Fey has organized an annual festival with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. From 2003, the “Heidelberg Mozart Weeks” was followed by the LA PASSIONE music festival, which is more broadly based in terms of art and programming. In 2003, Fey also founded the Mannheim Mozart Orchestra , whose stage debut took place on January 27, 2006 on Mozart's 250th birthday. With this orchestra, the conductor cultivates the works of Mozart's often unjustly forgotten artistic companions such as Ignaz Holzbauer , Antonio Salieri or Franz Xaver Süßmayr . In 2008 and 2010 there were recordings with mostly unknown overtures, stage and ballet music by Salieri.

Fey's CD recordings published by Hänssler Verlag - including over 20 symphonies by Joseph Haydn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - were praised by the specialist press. The recording of Beethoven's Fourth and Sixth Symphonies received a nomination for the “Cannes Classical Award 2003”. Fey's second Salieri album was nominated for a Grammy Award in December 2010 .

After a serious accident in 2014, Thomas Fey had to pause his activities, a full recovery and resumption of musical activities is not expected.
