Rudolf Buchbinder
Rudolf Buchbinder (born December 1, 1946 in Litoměřice , Czechoslovakia ) is an Austrian pianist .
Life
At the age of five, Buchbinder became the youngest student at the University of Music in Vienna . He gave his first public concert when he was nine years old. In 1958 he was accepted into the master class of Bruno Seidlhofer , who also belonged to Friedrich Gulda , at the Vienna University of Music . In 1961, at the age of 15, he won first prize with the Vienna Piano Trio at the ARD music competition of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation in Munich. In 1962 he received the Lipatti Medal. After that, Buchbinder worked primarily as a chamber musician . The violinist Josef Suk and the cellist János Starker were his partners. Since then he has performed with all major orchestras and conductors . Occasionally he has conducted from the piano himself, for example in concerts with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra . In the course of his career he has acquired an impressive repertoire , which ranges from classical and romantic to works of the 20th century. Buchbinder was responsible for the world premiere of works by Gottfried von Eine and Gerhard Wimberger (2nd piano concerto 1984). He was best known as a Beethoven specialist. He has recorded more than 200 records. In 1976 he won the Grand Prix du Disque for recording all of Joseph Haydn's piano works . Commented by Joachim Kaiser , he played Beethoven's piano sonatas at music festivals.
Buchbinder has been the artistic director of the new Grafenegg Music Festival at Schloss Grafenegg (Lower Austria) since 2007 . In 2009 he appeared in the award-winning documentary Pianomania by the directors Lilian Franck and Robert Cibis . The film was very well received nationally and internationally, was celebrated at many festivals and included in the catalog of the Goethe Institute . Buchbinder reads and paints in his spare time.
