Nelson Freire

Nelson Freire (born October 18, 1944 in Boa Esperança, Minas Gerais state , Brazil ) is a Brazilian pianist .

Life

Freire caused a sensation as a child and in 1957 came 7th in the piano competition in Rio de Janeiro . He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s, but then withdrew from concert life. After a long break from recording activities, recordings of his interpretations of works by Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann and the two piano concertos by Johannes Brahms with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Chailly have been published in recent years . In 2009 their joint album "Salzburg" was released, a live recording from the Salzburg Festival. In July 2019 he played the Piano Concerto No. 4 by Ludwig van Beethoven together with the Orchester Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo under the direction of its conductor Kazuki Yamada as part of the summer concerts in the Palace of Monaco .
