The Camerata Salzburg ( original spelling CAMERATA , formerly Camerata Academica des Mozarteum Salzburg or Camerata Academica Salzburg ) is a chamber orchestra based in Salzburg .

history

Camerata was founded in 1952 by Bernhard Paumgartner . The credo was "Making music in personal responsibility with a sense of community". As long-time directors, Bernhard Paumgartner and Sándor Végh shaped the sound of the Camerata. After Végh's death, Roger Norrington had a lasting influence as chief conductor of the orchestra. Norrington was subsequently "Conductor Laureate" of the Camerata. His successors as artistic directors were Leonidas Kavakos and the French conductor Louis Langrée.

In 2009 Kavakos announced his early resignation after differences with the orchestra. After disagreements, Louis Langrée prematurely ended his collaboration with the musicians of the Camerata Salzburg. Since 2016 the musicians of the Camerata have taken the artistic direction into their own hands, led by their concertmaster Gregory Ahss as “ primus inter pares ”.

In Salzburg, the Camerata is one of the ensembles of the Salzburg Festival and the Mozart Week . It also has its own subscription cycle in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation . With Schubert in Gastein , the orchestra organizes its own chamber music festival in Bad Gastein .

In addition to the works of Joseph Haydn , Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert - in keeping with the location - the focus is on the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Camerata Salzburg has appeared at the Lucerne Festival , the BBC Proms in London, the Edinburgh Festival and Carnegie Hall in New York. There are connections to the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Tonhalle Zurich , the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Culture and Congress Center Lucerne , the Prinzregententheater in Munich, the Cologne Philharmonic and the Philharmonie de Paris.

As conductors and leaders, Géza Anda , Sándor Végh and Roger Norrington , among others, have shaped the Camerata sound. Important musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Heinz Holliger , Alfred Brendel , Philippe Herreweghe , Franz Welser-Möst , Pinchas Zukerman , Anne-Sophie Mutter , Teodor Currentzis , Matthias Goerne , Fazıl Say , Renaud Capuçon , Yuja Wang and Hélène Grimaud will give concerts with the Camerata Salzburg.

Records and CD recordings from labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, DECCA, Sony and Warner Classics have received important prizes.
